Melbourne is known all over the world for its vast array of festivals and events, which are held all throughout the year. No matter what time of the year you decide to visit Melbourne, there will be some sort of festival, event or celebration for you to enjoy.

In the summer, you can welcome in the new year with the rest Melbourne’s inhabitants. New years eve fireworks and celebrations are held at hot spots throughout the city centre. You can find family friendly entertainment at Alexandra Gardens, Birrarung Marr, Southgate, Federation Square, New Quay and Waterfront City. New years eve events in Melbourne are open to the public and are free.

Gays and lesbians look forward to the annual cultural and art celebration dubbed Midsumma. The Midsumma festival is usually held in January and February. All around the city, in various venues, visitors can take part in the festivities by going to the theatre, attending the pride march, attending parties and more. This is definitely one of the gayest periods in Melbourne – no pun intended.

Music lovers and beach lovers should not miss the St. Kilda Festival, which is a festival featuring countless bands and musical performers. The setting? The bay, the beach, and the town’s beautiful architecture. This festival runs for seven days, all of which are packed with things to do and see.

Indulge in the most decadent of gastronomic experiences at the Melbourne Wine and Food Festival, which is held in March. You can taste some of the best wine that Australia has to offer, paired with excellently prepared dishes. Whether it is classy dining or al fresco dining that you prefer, you are sure to find it in this festival. At the end of the day, you will probably find yourself bringing home delectable goodies to remind you of your experience!

Melbourne locals and sporting fans always look forward to the Australian Grand Prix. This race is held annually in March and is always well attended and provides a thrilling experience to the spectators. More than the race itself, there are many other activities lined up to be enjoyed off the track.

Of course, you cannot truly enjoy what Melbourne has to offer in terms of sports if you do not watch at least one football game. In order to have the most authentic football experience, go to the Melbourne Cricket Ground or the Telstra Dome and watch an Australian Football League game. The season goes on for a full 22 weeks and you can join throngs of Australian football fans as they cheer their hearts out for their favourite team.

For the more culturally inclined, then you should visit Melbourne in October, when the International Arts Festival is held. Dance, theatre, music, opera, and other visual art performances and exhibits are the highlights of this festival.
